Wardrobe Tips For Professional Headshots

General Guidelines

Bring options - for on-location sessions, a second jacket, glasses, ties, or different hair style can go a long way.
Stick to solid colors or subtle texture - avoid busy patterns, text, and logos.
Avoid low-cut tops, fluffy sleeves, and flimsy collars.
Steam or iron jackets, shirts, and ties.
Choose necklaces that are short and simple.
Clean your glasses and bring multiple pairs if you have them - for battling glare and variety.
Consider trimming nails, nail polish, etc., if you will be doing tabletop/half body portraits.
For watches and other accessories, bring options to work with wardrobe and background variation.
If you're unsure about an outfit, bring it. It's much easier to eliminate an option than wish you had it.

If you have facial hair, consider trimming it before your session. Some clients shave midway through for variety.
Start using lip balm a few days beforehand if your lips tend to become dry.
If wearing lipstick, lip gloss, or makeup, neutral tones generally photograph more naturally than bold colors.
Avoid overly dramatic false eyelashes or very heavy mascara.
Headshots are notorious for creating “double chins”. While proper posing can offset this effect, a turtleneck is a great cheat code and looks great under a blazer.
